Q: How old do I have to be to have a facelift?

A: Facelifts are performed when the signs of aging start to bother you. It can happen in the early forties, but some people are not bothered by the signs of aging until in their fifties. The best thing to do is to explain to Dr Chan what features bother you and he will advise you as to how well they can be corrected. You can then decide whether the improvement is worthwhile for you and whether you will be happy with the result.

Q: How long will it last?

A: It depends on how you look at it. A facelift does not stop aging; it just turns the clock back. In this way we can say that the results are not permanent and you will eventually reach the same appearance in the future. The aging process varies from person to person and therefore it is not possible to predict how long the operation will last. However, you will age from where Dr Chan has left you and the advantage you have gained from the operation you will always have. In other words had you not had the operation, you would always look older.

Q: How do I know if I will benefit from a facelift?

A: Every patient is an individual and everybody's problem is not the same. The problem may only be looseness of the skin but often the underlying tissue is heavy and sags giving the appearance of heaviness around the mouth, jowls and loss of definition of the jaw line and cheekbones. There are different levels of facelifts, depending of which structures need to be lifted. Dr Chan has a special interest in facelift surgery and has developed techniques for himself over the years so that he has the ability to tailor they operation to suit the patient. He will be able to guide you as to what he can and can't do for you when you see him.

Q: Are there different degrees of face lifting?

A: Yes there certainly are. Generally mini facelifts do not last. Dr Chan performs at least three different types of facelifts, depending on the severity of the aging process, with the aim of producing maximum rejuvenation but a natural result. He often uses a combination of techniques to treat the face as a whole to optimise the results.

Q: Will I look natural?

A: The hallmark of a good facelift is that it looks natural and you look refreshed. A badly performed facelift will be obvious and people can pick that you have had a facelift. The trick is to identify where the problem areas are and work out what needs to be done. Every patient is unique and there is no standard facelift as there are no standard patients. Dr Chan's skill is to work out what the basic problem is and he will explain to you what the options for surgery will be. The plan for the operation is then worked out between you and Dr Chan.

Q: Do I have to repeat my facelift?

A: If a facelift is performed well and effectively it usually does not need to be repeated. That is why Dr Chan has a number of methods of surgery that will best suit your face. Because you age from where Dr Chan has left you, you will always have an advantage from the surgery and most patients can grow old gracefully.. A few patients may return many years later for some touch up surgery but this is rarely necessary.

Q: If I need my eyelids and face done, can I have the operation together?

A:
It makes sense to do the combined procedures. In this way you will only have one anaesthetic, one period of down time and there could be cost savings with the anaesthetic and hospital charges as most cosmetic surgery is not fully covered by the health funds for the hospital costs.

Q: Are the scars very noticeable and will anyone know I have had a facelift?

A: Dr Chan hides most of the scars in the hair bearing areas and behind the ear so that they are not noticeable. The scar in front of the ear is actually hidden in the contours of the ear and therefore very hard to pick even if the hairstyle exposes the ear as in the short haircut or worn back. Our staff or Dr Chan can explain this better to you by showing you how the scars will be hidden in your case.

Q: Do many men have a facelift?

A:
In this competitive world, more and more men are seeking facial surgery not really to look younger but in order not to look older. Often these patients want to just look refreshed so that they are not perceived to be old. There should not be any age discrimination but unfortunately there is and we often find men seeking facial rejuvenation, hoping to work for a few more years or if they don't want to be passed over for a younger competitor.
