A large droopy breast is not only cosmetically unattractive, it often causes significant physical difficulties such as pain in the neck and shoulders and difficulty with sport. These patients volunteer that it is difficult to find clothing to fit.

The operation involves decreasing the size of the breast, lifting the nipple higher and producing as nice a shape as possible.

Scars

Operations involve incisions and incisions leave scars when they heal. There are different ways of reducing the breast. When you speak to our patient educators ask to see examples of this.

New technique with shorter scars

The traditional techniques involved long scars especially underneath the breast. With the new technique which is suitable for most but not all patients, the scar under the breast is very short or non existent. Dr Chan will be able to advise you whether this short scar operation is possible for you

Not dangerous Not very painful

The operation takes about 3 hours. Every operation carries some risks. It is however not considered a dangerous operation. Patients often comment that the operation is not as painful as they have expected.

Must not be overweight

To have the best possible result the patient needs to be within 10% of her ideal body weight. Not only is it difficult to make a nice breast that is in proportion with her body but if a person is overweight, the risks are increased significantly both with the anaesthetic and the operation.

Smoking and the operation

Smoking is not only bad for the anaesthetic, it can cause death of the nipple and other parts of the breast due to the compromised circulation. Dr. Chan recommends giving up smoking at least a month before the operation and insists on no smoking for at least two weeks after the operation. He will not perform the operation on a smoker.
